Keep Teeth Healthy with Licorice Root
The two main compounds in licorice, licoricidin, and licorisoflavan A, were found to be the most effective at inhibiting the growth of bacteria that cause tooth decay.
These and other compounds found in licorice root have also been shown to prevent the growth of bacteria associated with periodontitis, which is an inflammatory disease that can damage bones, gums, and tissues that maintain teeth.
The lead author of the study, Dr. Stefan Gafner, is a researcher at Tom’s, a toothpaste producer in Maine, an independent division of Colgate-Palmolive. Licorice root is an ingredient in certain products.
Chewing licorice root can help reduce tooth decay. Licorice is a natural antibacterial agent that inhibits the bacteria that cause tooth decay to form and grow. Remember, licorice root is not the same as licorice candy! Instead, this is the actual root of the vanilla itself from which the candy is extracted. You can often find licorice root in your local health food store and use it in combination with other ingredients to enhance its resistance to toxicity and treat tooth decay and gum disease.
Diet Changes to Reduce Bacteria
In addition to remedies, general dietary changes can also help slow down the process of tooth decay. If you regularly consume sweet, sugary snacks and sugar-sweetened beverages (such as fruit juice or soda), you can help to spread tooth decay by feeding harmful bacteria. Consider reducing the consumption of sugary snacks and beverages, and use straws when consuming foods such as soda and juice, so the sticky sugar will bypass the teeth. It is a good idea to brush and floss your teeth immediately and then perform a good antibacterial mouthwash. The idea here is to prevent sugar residue from remaining in your mouth and feed bacteria, which will allow them to multiply and spread. Eating healthy and fresh food minimizes the chances of accumulating bacteria on your teeth thus prevents you from dental problems.
Nothing Beats Good Dental Hygiene Habits
All of the above are remedies that can help solve problems that have developed, but the best defense is a good offense. Proper dental hygiene habits, including daily brushing and flossing and regular dental checkups, are the optimum ways to keep dental problems at a bay.
Make sure to brush at least twice a day, use dental floss carefully, and use high-quality mouthwash products regularly. Ideally, you should brush and floss your teeth every day before bed, after getting up in the morning, and after each meal. Use a mouthwash at least twice a day to help slow down the occurrence of tooth decay.
