Hundreds of myths about dental health and dentistry are floating on the Internet. Most of us know that good oral hygiene is essential to our teeth and overall health. However, the Internet is flooded with dental hygiene advice, and it is difficult for a person to tell which ones are trustworthy and which ones are myths. Therefore, I decided to introduce you to the most common dental health myths and debunk them: 

 The harder you brush, the cleaner your teeth.

The fact is that brushing hard will not make the teeth cleaner, but will erode some of the enamel of the tooth which protects the inside of the tooth from tooth decay and cavities. In order to get the most benefit from brushing your teeth, dental experts recommend you to use a soft toothbrush or electronic toothbrush and combine it with appropriate brushing techniques. The whiter your teeth, the healthier they are. 

This may be correct, but it is not always the case. Everyone’s teeth are different. Variations in enamel thickness and enamel shade will emit colors other than natural white. As long as you maintain proper personal dental hygiene and perform routine dental inspections and cleanings, you don’t have to worry about the color of your teeth affecting your overall health. However, if you are dissatisfied with the color of your teeth for aesthetic reasons then please consult your dentist to find out which method can enhance your smile. 

Bad breath is a sign of gum disease. 

The truth is that gum disease is just one possible cause of bad breath. If you have bad breath, the best way is to see a dentist first. If there is no problem with your dental health, then you should consult your primary care doctor. In addition to gum disease, bad breath can also be caused by many other health problems, including digestive system problems, respiratory infections, chronic sinus infections, diabetes, and liver or kidney problems.  

If your gums bleed while flossing, you should stop flossing.

If the flossing gums bleed during the cleaning process, it is probably caused by inflammation. This is because bacteria and plaque are stuck between the teeth, and the toothbrush bristles cannot reach it. If you are not in the habit of using dental floss regularly, you are likely to find bleeding gums, the first time you try to use dental floss. However, if you floss every day then the bleeding will disappear over time. 

If your smile looks healthy, you don’t need to visit a  dentist

Even if you do not experience any dental problems then also it is important to arrange dental examination and cleaning at least twice a year to ensure that your teeth are truly healthy. During regular check-ups, your dentist will be able to detect any changes in oral health in the early stages of your oral health, such as tooth decay or gum disease. In the long run, going to the dentist twice a year can save your treatment time and save a lot of money.
